An hour later, she slips on clothes and we head to the living room, hand in hand. The end of our time together is nearing and I need to tell her I have to go. I don’t want to, but duty and commitment are part of my DNA. One more mission is all I’ll do. One more.

She picks up her phone and her head tips. “Oh, my God. They can’t be serious?” Her face pales as she covers her mouth with her cupped hand.

“What’s going on?”

She sinks down into a chair. “They found me a donor in Sioux Falls.”

I make it to her and fall to my knees to face her. “Baby, that’s amazing. You’re gonna be okay.”

She says nothing for a couple minutes, but the entire time she shakes her head. “No. This isn’t meant for me. I…I’ve come to grips with what’ll happen. This…” She looks up at me. “This wasn’t supposed to happen. It’s a one in a ten chance. I’m stage four, low importance. It’s not mine.”

I lean forward and pull her to my chest. “There’s always a chance. Look at me, I came back from the dead.”

“This heart isn’t mine. Someone else have the heart.”

My body chills and I lean back. “What are you talking about? This could save you.”

“Or it could kill me.” She pushes on me to move and stands, pacing the floor. “I’ve come to grips with my fate and I’m fine with it. Plus, there’s a chance that they’ll get me there and I won’t even qualify. I’ve put on a little weight—eating what I wanted. Or maybe…maybe they won’t like my blood work. Or I’ll reject it and it’ll be for nothing. There has to be someone who needs it more than I do. And…” Her chest rises and falls fast as she reaches for reasoning.

I can’t believe I’m hearing this, but I can believe how scared she might be. I know that same feeling—fighting hope and not believing she’s worth something more. She’s made her peace and I understand that all too well.

“Irie, think about your parents and what this would mean to so many people. What it would mean to me.”

“But you’re leaving. I saw your phone light up in the bedroom when you were in the bathroom. The text said you’ll be on a plane at midnight, four hours from now.”

I run a hand over my hair. “That’s my job. And I’ll be back in twenty-four hours, probably before you’re out of surgery. Plus, this is your life we’re talking about!”

“Then we agree on one thing…this is my life. And I get to decide what to do with it.”

“You’re just going to give up?” My chest clenches and I swear I feel her pain.

“Sorry but I need to make a phone call to call off the transplant team.” She waves her phone at me.

And that’s my cue to lay it out there.

I walk to her. “Please, don’t do this. I’m begging you.”

“Don’t do what?”

“Don’t push away the chance that we can have something.
